Queensland Home Warranty Scheme is in review.
Queensland Government seeks public feedback on current scheme
Launched in 1977, the Queensland Government’s Home Warranty Scheme has come a long way. As recent as 2016, the scheme undertook changes in an effort to further strengthen. Now the Government is seeking your feedback to guide the most recent review.
What is the Home Warranty Scheme?
- Created to safeguard members of the public undergoing new builds or renovations
- By covering the cost of construction defects where a building contractor has failed to rectify issues
- Also covers work not completed by a building contractor
- Covers costs if the building itself suffers ground movement
What type of work is covered?
- Residential construction work over $3,300
- Must be on a detached house, unit building, townhouse or duplex no more than three storeys
- Covers swimming pool, carports and shed constructions
- Also covers refit of fixtures and fittings in kitchens and bathrooms
Who has to pay for the Home Warranty Scheme?
- The Building Contractor pays a premium to QBCC (Queensland Building and Construction Committee) to insure the construction
- That amount is then passed onto the customer as part of the building contract and must be paid before construction begins
- If QBCC pays a customer who has suffered from the issues noted above, QBCC make contact with the building contractor involved to seek payment for the costs
How long does the Insurance cover?
Six years and 6 months is covered under the home warranty scheme – starting from the date that the insurance is paid, a contract is signed or work commences.
Why is feedback needed?
If you can spare 10-20 minutes to complete the online survey, it would greatly help to ensure government fully understands and ensures:
- The insurance cover is adequate and appropriate for current building types and livability
- Required flexibility is available to suit current market conditions
- Affordability
- Streamlined processes that are effective and not overly time consuming
- Helps educate customers
How can you provide feedback on the current Home Warranty Scheme?
Public feedback is open until August 31, 2021.
